Chapter Seven

Waves of shock washed through Binney, welding her boots to a spot next to Rio’s porch steps even after the blue car had disappeared from sight. Its dust had totally dissipated by the time she quit reeling enough to chastise herself for not committing to memory the number on the license plate. It had been a Nevada plate, all right.

But as her initial stunned feelings subsided, stilling her racing heart, a realization of the impact of what had just transpired kick-started her still-addled brain. Not only had she failed to mentally log the license number, she hadn’t asked the woman’s name, nor inquired about the last name of the baby’s birth mother.

Other emotions coursed through her one after another. Disappointment in Rio. Not just because he’d kissed her and had said he wanted her to remain in his life when he had had another relationship on a not-so-back burner, although that stung her personally. She felt sorrow for the baby, who, like her, would grow up without a mother.

Suddenly cold in spite of standing in the late-summer sunshine, Binney shivered and wished she could hop on her Harley and leave this job right now. She had again let her heart get too invested in a McNabb twin.

Of course she couldn’t run off. She had to take Rio his son, and continue doing her job until he was able to make other arrangements.

After what seemed like an eternity of fence-straddling passed, she tamped down the ache in the back of her throat. Telling herself Rio’s problems didn’t truly matter, she juggled the basket and the two totes and went into the house.

Rio was apparently just waking up. His eyelids fluttered, but sprung wide when Binney kicked the door closed with a loud bang.

Smothering a yawn, he cleared his throat. “How long have I been sawing logs? We missed lunch. I’m starved.” Finally noticing that she was laboring under a burden, he blinked a few more times. “What’s all that? Did Rhonda go shopping? If so, why isn’t she or JJ helping you carry stuff in?”

Binney dropped the totes at the foot of his bed, pressed the button to raise his torso to a partial incline and set the wicker basket across his thighs.

“What’s this?” He grasped one of the handles with his newly freed hand, but because it still lacked full mobility he wasn’t able to bend down the side to see in the basket.

Tag, who’d also been sleeping below the bed, woke up and shook himself hard. He whined and leaped up until both feet rested on the bed. Snuffling the basket, he proceeded to bark. And he barked until the occupant of the basket awakened and began to cry.

Rio let go of the basket rim and reared back as if he’d been burned. “Binney...what the hell?”

Urging the dog away from the bed, she ordered him to sit. Fixing Rio with her sternest nurse’s glare, she unloaded on him. “Well, Rio, this is your son. He didn’t come by stork, but did arrive special delivery.
